Holiday Giving Update from Buchanan Children’s Charities

Holiday Giving Update from Buchanan Children’s Charities

In the spirit of the holiday season, Buchanan Children’s Charities donated a total of $12,500 to four charities that are special to Buchanan Street employees and their families.

1. Serving Kids Hope

Buchanan Street Partners was honored to welcome Dr. Patricia Riba, a Board-certified community pediatrician and author in Orange County who focuses her practice on obesity and other nutrition-related conditions in children, to the company holiday Zoom lunch in December 2020.Dr. Riba presented her organization, Serving Kids Hope, founded in 2002 with a missionto promote healthy lifestyles in children, families, and communities by addressing medical, nutritional, social, economic, and behavioral issues in a comprehensive, compassionate, and empowering manner.

With a 90% success rate for individual patient care and statistically significant outcomes for group care, they reached 13,000 people at five clinics and nearly 50 schools during 2020.In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, they streamlined their team and scaled their efforts by providing patient care via telemedicine, which further inspired the development of a new novel educational program: Dr. Patricia’s Health Club: Being Healthy from A-Z. This program included 30-second public service announcements on PBS SoCal in September 2020, and has already reached more than 750,000 impressions with letters A, B, and C.

2. Block the Blaze

Block the Blaze helps educate kids on skin cancer awareness. To date, the program has educated more than 500,000 youth over the past 15 years on how to play it safe in the sun. The education is also provided in the classroom during the school year and at camps such as the junior lifeguard summer program. During 2020 with the challenges of COVID-19, they were still able to educate 9,000 kids (and a normal year would impact approximately 25,000 kids). The program runs coast to coast. Their main goal is to reduce the number of people who get skin cancer in the future by starting with the kids. The kids receive a free hat and sunscreen face stick to Block the Blaze immediately.

3. CAST

The CAST program began in 1989 and helps children that have come in after an abusive event. The child-focused and friendly environment that CAST serves helps to reduce the trauma for these children. The donation will be used to purchase blankets, toys, food, and art supplies for the children to play with. The funds will also be used to help train new CAST advocates—the volunteers who keep the children occupied while they are waiting to go through the process after an abusive event. Each year over 1,000 children in Orange County are seen at their office.

4. Orange County Ronald McDonald House

In support of the passion and special bond with the OCRMH of Talonvest, a firm whose founders were former Buchanan Street Partners employees and with whom Buchanan is working with on our new self-storage activities, Buchanan contributed to the virtual 2021 OCRMH Walk for Kids. The OCRMH provides a comforting home away from home where children and their families embrace life and healing with a sense of hope, enthusiasm, courage, and joy. Even with pandemic restrictions in 2020, the Orange County Ronald McDonald House aided more than 800 families of seriously ill children receiving treatment from Orange County hospitals.
